These Global Recommendations on Nationality and Statelessness in the Context of Climate Change (‘Global Recommendations’) respond to an urgent but under-recognized nexus between climate change, nationality, and statelessness. Although every person has the right to a nationality, millions of people remain stateless or without a recognized nationality status, often with limited access to rights, services, and protection.
Behind the Scenes:
The Art and Design of the ‘Global Recommendations’
Working alongside the team at the Peter Mc Mullin Centre on Statelessness at the University of Melbourne Jacinta created more than 80 original artworks for the ‘Global Recommendations’. Each piece was hand-printed using a gel-plate technique, layering ink with Australian flora to create unique impressions. This technique grew from a children’s art workshop Jacinta facilitated, and its organic, hands-on nature helped bring a sense of human presence into each scene.
The document design was carefully considered to support the written content, making complex information accessible and visually engaging. While the illustrations tell the story of how climate change can threaten lives, identity and belonging, they also leave us feeling hopeful that we can take action to protect people’s right to a nationality.
